AK Files: Warhol Polaroid Camera to be Auctioned

Andy Warhol's infamous Polaroid SX-70 Land camera and flash goes under the hammer at Julian's Auctions in Beverly Hills on 18th May.

Art collectors of Art Kabinett social media network will have the opportunity to bid on this rare symbol of American Pop Art.

The camera was owned by Warhol and last used at the Limelight nightclub in Manhattan in 1986 shortly before the artist's untimely death after complications during a routine operation.

Warhol gifted this camera to longtime friend, associate and collector of celebrity art, Baird Jones (1953-2006). He had met Jones in the 1970’s NYC party circuit, where Jones was a renowned nightlife promoter.

AK Files: Crillon Contents Go to Gavel

Paris - One of the grandest luxury hotels in the word will put most of its of furniture and fine wines under the hammer this week to help raise funds for a lengthy restoration.

Art collectors of ArtKabinett social media network will have the opportunity to bid on everything from great works of art to embroidered towels and bathrobes.

The sumptuous Hotel Crillon, hushed after the departure of its last guests in March, has been transformed into a buyer's wonderland as it closes its doors for a two-year renovation.

Full suites of furniture are on display ahead of a series of auctions scheduled for April 18-22, with about 3,500 lots including carpets and curtains expected to raise hundreds of thousands of euros.

AK Files: Diamond Sets World Record

A colorless 76.02-carat diamond sold this week in Switzerland for 20.4 million Swiss francs ($21.5 million) with fees, setting a record auction price per carat.

Art collectors of ArtKabinett social network have witnessed some amazing auctions this week.

Known as the Archduke Joseph Diamond, the internally flawless stone was the most highly valued lot in a jewelry auction held by Christie’s International at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues, Geneva.

The gem was bought by telephone bidder against an estimate of $15 million to $25 million, based on hammer prices. Using Christie’s exchange-rate figures this gives a price of $282,545 per carat, a record for a colorless stone, beating the $276,600 set for the Beau Sancy diamond at Sotheby’s, Geneva, in May.

Astor Estate Gets Sold

AK Files: Astor Auction Exceeds Estimate

A 14th century bronze figure of a six-headed Tibetan deity that belonged to Brooke Astor and was expected to sell for $2,500 to $3,500 went for $134,500 this week at Sotheby’s.

“I was going to bid on it, but it went through the roof,” said Philip Marshall, Astor’s grandson, as a two-day auction of the New York philanthropist’s property got under way. “It’s her provenance.”

An Indian carved ivory elephant mounted in gold and jewels, retailed by Van Cleef & Arpels, New York. Estimated at $6,000 to $8,000, it sold for $68,500.

AK Files: Astor Auctions Evoke Gilded Life

Philanthropist Brooke Astor’s lacquered Japanese cabinets, Louis XV clocks and porcelain tea sets are heading to the auction block at Sotheby’s on Sept. 24 and 25.

Art collectors of Art Kabinett social network will find lots to bid on at these fascinating auctions of a gilded life.

The sale “Property From the Estate of Brooke Astor” includes more than 900 lots from her Park Avenue duplex and her Westchester mansion, Holly Hill.

Expected to tally as much as $9.7 million, the proceeds will benefit Astor’s favorite charities, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Animal Medical Center and New York schools.

Astor died in 2007 at the age of 105.

AK Files: Market Hot for Original Fahrenheit

London - One of only three known mercury thermometers by the Dutch inventor Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit is estimated to sell for as much as £100,000 at auction in early October.

Art collectors of ArtKabinett social network will be "hot" to bid on this rare collectible.

The recently rediscovered brass instrument is inscribed “Fahrenheit” and “Amst.,” (Amsterdam), where the Dutchman lectured in chemistry from 1718.

Fahrenheit invented the mercury thermometer in 1714. His two previously known examples are in the Museum Boerhaave, Leiden, the Netherlands.

This third was found in a private collection put together in the 1970s, said Christie’s, who will be offering it for sale on Oct. 9 with a low estimate of £70,000 .
