Art Basel Launches 13th Miami Show

MIAMI -- This week, Art Basel stages one of the largest art shows for Modern and Contemporary works of art in Miami Beach Florida, and ArtKabinett collectors have their eyes and ears in the city, to report first hand what's on.

Participating galleries, include some of the worlds leading art establishments with artworks presented, and the content of parallel programming produced in collaboration with local institutions for each edition.

Since its inception in 2002, Art Basel’s show in Miami Beach has itself as the premier show in the Americas and ranks as one of the favourite winter event of the international art world.

This year, Noah Horowitz will direct Art Basel's Miami Beach show having been appointed Director Americas for Art Basel in August 2015. The week is not only about the main fair but also about a multitude of collateral events up and down and across the city. Here are our favorites:

SEAN KELLY | NEW YORK Booth B17

Sean Kelly is delighted to participate in Art Basel’s show in Miami Beach 2015, with a presentation of works by the following artists: Marina Abramović, Los Carpinteros, James Casebere, Jose Dávila, Iran do Espírito Santo, Antony Gormley, Laurent Grasso, Candida Höfer, Callum Innes, Idris Khan, Robert Mapplethorpe, Hugo McCloud, Alec Soth, James White, and Kehinde Wiley. About the gallery’s participation, Sean Kelly states, “We always look forward to Miami, but this year’s fair is the biggest and, arguably, the most important yet. The 2015 edition of the fair is the first under its new Director, Noah Horowitz, and is sure to be a landmark event.”

LEHMANN MAUPIN | NEW YORK | HONG KONG Booth K16

At Art Basel in Miami Beach, Lehmann Maupin will open the fair with an all-female artist booth, showcasing new works by Mary Corse, Tracey Emin, Teresita Fernández, Shirazeh Houshiary, Klara Kristalova, Lee Bul, and Mickalene Thomas. The gallery will also highlight works by Ashley Bickerton, Billy Childish, Roberto Cuoghi, Robin Rhode, Do Ho Suh, and Juergen Teller.

Lehmann Maupin will also present a dedicated selection of new works by Nari Ward as part of Kabinett. The centerpiece of this presentation will be We Shall Overcome, a new large-scale installation comprised of hundreds of shoelaces, suggesting an anonymous mass of people and the idea of mobility. On view concurrently during the fair will be Nari Ward: Sun Splashed, a mid-career survey exhibition at the Pérez Art Museum Miami.

PACE GALLERY | NEW YORK | LONDON | BEIJING | HONG KONG Booth B5

Pace Gallery will present a selection of works by modern and contemporary masters with a significant focus on the work of Louise Nevelson and her sphere of influence on post-war and contemporary art. The booth will feature Nevelson’s large-scale, monochromatic wall reliefs and free-standing sculptures in wood, as well as collage works from the 1960s and 1970s. It will also include rarely exhibited assemblage works, which extend Nevelson’s structural arrangements and highlight her working method and approach to material.

JACK SHAINMAN | NEW YORK | KINDERHOOK Booth B21

Jack Shainman will present new and significant works by a selection of gallery artists, including El Anatsui, Yoan Capote, Nick Cave, Barkley L. Hendricks, Brad Kahlhamer, Hayv Kahraman, Titus Kaphar, Enrique Martínez Celaya, Richard Mosse, Jackie Nickerson, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Hank Willis Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.

The gallery will also exhibit Ernest and Ruth, 2015, a sculpture by Hank Willis Thomas in the Public sector of the show. Ernest and Ruth takes the familiar form of a cartoon speech bubble, open in the center to form a bench where participants become physical manifestations of ‘truth’. Lincoln, Lonnie, and Me- A Story in 5 Parts, 2012, a film by Carrie Mae Weems will also be on view in the Film Library.

SPRÜTH MAGERS | BERLIN | LONDON | LOS ANGELES Booth L16

For this year’s edition of Art Basel Miami Beach Sprüth Magers will present works by a number of the gallery’s US-based artists including John Baldessari, George Condo; Barbara Kruger, Louise Lawler and Cindy Sherman. Works include a new large-scale painting from 2015 by George Condo; an archival print on canvas from 1996 by John Baldessari; and a multi-panel metal print by Cindy Sherman - part of a new body of work created in 2015 in which the artist adapts unpublished images from previous series.

STPI | SINGAPORE Booth B18

STPI returns to Art Basel in Miami Beach this year, featuring a number of leading internationally recognized artists, including Korean artist Do Ho Suh, Singaporean artist Jane Lee and British artist Ryan Gander. Simultaneously, Do Ho Suh’s: New Works runs from November 7 to January 2 at STPI in Singapore.

MICHAEL WERNER GALLERY | NEW YORK | LONDON | BERLIN Booth C10

Michael Werner gallery is pleased to participate in the 2015 edition of Art Basel Miami Beach. The gallery will present work by artists including A.R Penck, ahead of the artist’s solo exhibition at Michael Werner London from 10 December. Work by Gianni Piacentino will also be on display, coinciding with a presentation of the artist at Prada Foundation in Milan. Further artists presented include Aaron Curry, Enrico David, Markus Lupertz and Sigmar Polke.
